coming next from adult only: the repress of one of the most sought-after 12s from the label back catalogue. ao19: “formula express – main course” was originally released in 2002 and featured guillaume la tortue, jef k and chris carrier.
this is actually some of the last records ever produced by the mysterious guillaume la tortue, one of the pioneer of electronic music in france, who’s quoted by laurent garnier in his infamous “electrochoc” book as one of his main influence back in the days.

the record opens on the “main course”: a classic tech-house number with a beautiful 909 beat and a tasteful use of various samples and fx all through the track. the funky vocals still sound fresh today but the secret here (as often with chris carrier’s related work) is the groove – the kind of groove that reminds you summer days in the park while the strong bass-line announces already the next track.
on the flip, “starter” stands out as the perfect dancefloor killer with an infernal groove and a real fat analog bass-line that will keep you moving whether you want it or not. add just a few crispy tribal percussions on a classic raw 909 beat and you got the simplest and dubbiest song of the record but also the most efficient dancefloorwise.
the last cut, “apple pie”, might be the deepest of them all. spacy melodies and trippy vocals in the background make you first feel like you’re chillin on some extraterrestrial beach far away from earth. it starts as a nice breakbeat building the atmosphere before slowly evolving into a more 4-4esque tech-house with the bass coming in only after a couple of minutes. even if the sound was resolutely analogic, the whole ep is extremely well produced with a special care for details. at many levels this three-track ep is a landmark in the label history.

opia002 coming in thick and fast. four tracks. two artists. leading the way is steve marie, coming through with a refined combination of euphoria with a definite rave tinge. opiace is a pacey number from the off, with a bassline that creeps in and just keeps on coming back to get you. a dark and mysterious affair in yvar , driven and punchy, laced with peculiar voices.

after releasing abe security systems on the previous release, luis malon returns, this time with two tracks which take up the whole of the b side. a constant progression of obscurity and curious sounds from the south american artist in maybe forever baby . rounding off the ep is astrosonik , broken drums lead you to a place of otherworldly atmospheres, absorbing you in the trip. acquired grooves intelligently arranged by the young talent.

ricky force makes a quickfire return to repertoire after the success of make it right / suburban nights. -everything- is an apache-driven slow burner that moves through the gears into a euphoric breakdown. hands in the air vibes. -special- is a no-nonsense amen track, the kind that ricky does so well, built for the dance floor.

multi culti is honoured to reissue this 1996 classic by ghanian highlife legend gyedu blay ambolley, adding amazing remixes by red axes and johnny aux, as well as an in-house edit by dreems & thomas von party. a major force in afro-funk since the early 1970s, gyedu blay ambolley is considered the godfather of hiplife, transforming the highlife genre by adding elements of hip-hop, funk and jazz. the opportunity to reissue the amazing and influential simi rapp is one of the clear high points of the label s trajectory thus far. the reissue package is bolstered by an ecstatic rework by israeli gurus red axes, an early-morning anthem from master remixer johnny aux, and a laid-back house edit from multi culti executive shamans dreems and thomas von party. multi culti: voyaging through time, space and licensing agreements to bring you the best music the world has to offer

lucy’s musical oeuvre piles high, as a figure in the sydney underground for the past 15 years she has always explored sounds that playfully antagonize the status-quo, the dysfunctional no-wave approach of her band naked on the vague and the manipulated tape ambience of half high echo throughout cliché’s principle in the form of chorus buzzed synth chords, abstract drones and ethereal evocation. while there is the strong presence of a live veteran at work behind the machines, cliché’s principle holds five tracks produced purely with the intention of paving the dance-floor.

a collection of unreleased music from an undisclosed source going by the codename of „abstract tune“, possibly produced around the early 90’s, was recently acquired through a fortuitous dat discovery in an italian vintage market by alpha 2000’s retrieval team.

at the forefront of the irish electronic music scene, sligo-born berlin-based duo brame & hamo, aka tiarnan mcmorrow and conor hamilton, announce their hotly anticipated fourth ep, celebrity impersonator. via their own imprint, brame & hamo. the title reflects the duos personality and playful energy, nodding to their love of celebrity impersonators whilst growing up. we have a bit of a soft spot for impersonators as it is a pretty ridiculous way to earn a living. a bit like djing! our favs were those of tom cruise, bill gates, gordon ramsay and johnny depp. opening with ‘midnight express, the rolling melodics nod to the early sounds of prog house and italo, acting as a transitional opener to their signature trance via techno scores. on the b-side, title track ‘celebrity impersonator, is a moody four four that edges into the darker realms with their love of breakbeat shimmering through, resulting in a club ready anthem. melting down into a rolling trance groove with a late night heady feel, ‘request rhythm closes the ep. with an impressive discography of eps behind them on their own imprint - trants, club orange and the dj favourite, limewire, as well as bookings worldwide the irish pair are set to propel onwards from sligo to berlin and beyond.

the elusive producer nortasun hasn’t released a record since his debut one through saft back in 2016. after two years, it’s time for a follow up which is fittingly named “two”. the track titles also resume in a fashionable manner with the opening track being titled: “untitled 3”. on this track, nortasun introduces a firm rhythm that is supported by the impossibly beautiful strings that serve as the tracks key element and appear throughout. next up is the antonzap remix. antonzap doesn’t do the stereotypical remix take on the original. his version is dub laden, otherworldly, and only implements miniscule pieces from the original take. with just under 7 minutes, the remix version is a true sonic voyage.
on the b-side, nortasun takes a more dubbed out approach to modern day house music. “untitled 4” is a work of precision. the carefully crafted hats and dub elements sizzle throughout the entire track and help the track morph into a stunning piece of dance floor music around the four minute mark. nortasun cleverly introduces a thumping bass that changes up the mood for the entire work.

russian drum & bass producer black barrel is one of the most sought after producers to come through the ranks in recent months. after his discovery by ant tc1, a tastemaker who’s founded the careers of many similarly talented artists, he was brought into the fold of dispatch recordings and has since dropped a plethora of heavy-hitting releases which have solidified his place within the genre. with support from many of the underground scene’s pivotal heads, including break, radio 1’s rene lavice and dlr, his widening back catalogue is finding itself within major clubs globally.

copenhagens terry tester (brownswood / bbe) merges his love for midwest house and cosmic funk butter on four-tracker space million for creak inc., journeying through dream state deep house, gritty mpc workouts and low-end boogie territory for an undeniably original take on four-to-the-floor rhythms. within terry testers two-decade long career as a turntablist and beatmaker his eminent take on house, hiphop and soul has been commissioned by gilles petterson for his ‘bubblers’ compilation series on brownswood recordings, jahi featuring american neo-soul singer dwele, and marc mac (4hero, visioneers, nu era) on bbe remixing alongside dj jazzy jeff, as well as releasing two full-length solo albums horses and diamonds and short suite.

first release of the french young producer adrien van de velde aka a strange wedding, meta romance is a three track ep offering a reflexion on slow trance through different modern style of music. powerful beats are melted with hypnotic melodies, epic pads and tribal vocals to give a mystical yet contemporary vision of dance music.

berlin based techno titan frank muller adopts his beroshima alias for a new four track ep that is already been hailed by the likes of marcel dettman and laurent garnier. first emerging in the nineties, muller has since become a techno great who has played from asia to south america and beyond. he’s had plenty of underground hits on the likes of cocoon and soma, and held some key residencies over the years. always one to command your attention with his multi layered grooves, this ep features an old juan atkins sample “buy some shit from detroit” that has been part of beroshima’s live sets for years. excellent opener ‘encounter’ reflects a recent idea jeff mills and muller had to produce tracks together for a not yet produced sci-fi movie. it is an eight-minute astral techno trip with smooth, driving drums and plenty of intergalactic synth lines. ‘the passion of lovers’ transfers the organic beroshima style into 2018 and shows off frank’s passion for spaced out electronica. it’s a brilliantly bumping cut with lithe synths and melodies adding that soul and colour as it races through the galaxies. the iconic ‘buy some’ with the atkins sample then surges into the future with icy hi hats dancing over rubbery drums. the warped synths take the lead and bring a real sense of off kilter energy to this most timeless bit of techno. last of all is the fantastic space mix of ‘encounter’ which is dreamy and cinematic with exquisite keys and pads colouring in a huge night sky as the drums drive things along. this is an archetypal techno ep filled with cosmic colours and serene emotions.

motorcity wine recordings returns in fine style with its second ep featuring a swashbuckling blend of house and jazz sounds from detroiters and their compatriots. rising live techno star haz mat leads this 12” with a house-tinged boogie funk cover of blue six’s “music & wine”, complete with vocoder and massive drums. kuumba reunion band slides through next with the afro-jazz number “3 fingered fist (jabbar)”, a cut loaded with hand drums and chunky saxophone solos for the jazzdancers and listeners alike. motorcity wine guest and london native aroop roy kicks off the flip with a dubbed out beatdown house joint, a brilliant midtempo track perfect for the dread moments of the night. last but certainly not least, the hughes/smith quintet finish the release with an uptempo jazz-funk piece, with generous amounts of fender rhodes and call-and-response melodies. only 500 vinyl pressed enjoy the soulful sounds of detroit.

comes with a huge 22x28 newprint poster in japanese sealed poly sleeve. chicago s beau wanzer returns to the label with his signature sound of crunched out bizarro electronics. tip! unmistakenly, wanzer has carved his own niche through the years as this ep rightly reflects the vast range of styles he works in. from the hypnotic head nod of wick hunny to the juicy back alley electro wave of the grim whim or the nasty metallic stomp of he spilled my drink we get wanzer in top freak form, mangling the drum machines and pushing the synths to the edge. a welcome return to say the least.

brassfoot makes his dba debut following a number of appearances at the dba presents parties. since breaking through with his apron ep on funkinevens world-leading label in 2015, brassfoot has turned heads with releases on uttu, paul du lac s bio rhythm, and his own seminal nca recordings. on the indentured servitude ep brassfoot showcases his own unique stepping house and techno flavour across six tracks, with time to meditate and reflect between the party-starting peak timers also included. blinds down, crouched over my desk, i switch on my machines. whatever the final result is, i wouldn t even bother unless i was having fun first. sometimes theres just one tiny portion of magic after a long recording session, but its always about the enjoyment first. its dark inside and it influences the mood of the music. it s also dark outside and it s obvious where that leaves its mark. the law of seven refers to the spiritualist philosopher gurdjieffs idea that the evolution of phenomena proceeds according to a universal seven-step process. clay tells us that while this idea did not strictly factor into the composition of these tracks, you could abstract some elements into the musical creation process. gurdjieff was quite a thinker, but also composed music so i thought the lines i was drawing carried some weight. in particular his notion that creation proceeds through increasing restrictions which i find to be incredibly relevant to my process at least. time limitations and performance settings particularly seem to allow me to be far more productive than just working freely with no solid end point in mind

life is complex and since the only way out is through, complexity demands to be embraced. as a label dedicated to bringing two unique minds together for each record, inkblots has always aimed at uniting kindred spirits by making their differences audible. with two contributions each by berlin’s irakli and stanislav tolkachev, the fourth instalment of haiku’s imprint makes no exception. instead, it might be its most exceptional offering yet. just like the principle of the rorschach test at the conceptual core of the label, the musical perspectives offered on inkblots 004 are minimalistic at their base but open up a pathway into two complex musical minds.

this newest installment of the ongoin series presents four very different hardspace mixes, each one of which allowing a different shade of len fakis musical guise to shine through. on guidance a quick-paced bounce grooves on top of a three-note bassline, suspenseful strings and sensous vox giving the track an unsuspectedly burning itch. equally smacking, yet both tribal and technoid is his rework of f.e.x‘s never give up, which keeps breaking down in order for the slicing hats to come back in and do their magic. tackling a current uk-techno-favorite on the flip, randomer & cadans‘ anchor has got a grimey grind to it, which here gets churned into an even more wicked version of a twisted trip down the rabbit hole. closing the ep out on a bleeping note, ribé‘s outlines is a deep-spacious, echo-laden affair, oscillating in tune and zoning alongside skitting percussives. as with all releases of lf rmx, the proceeds of this record will be forwarded to the berlin organization straßenkinder e.v. to be used in actions against child poverty.

another master of the soundtrack is francesco de masi, that, through a long carrier, has moved between different genres, giving the soundtrack to spaghetti western movies (like vado l’ammazzo e torno) comedies, and action movies like la macchina della violenza (the big game), by robert day. a soundtrack that goes from tense and nervous songs, to soft ballads with female voice.

when you think about italian crime movies, one of the first names to get to your mind is probably franco micalizzi, the maestro behind terrific and unforgettable soundtracks like napoli violenta and italia a mano armata. through all is carrier, nonetheless, there’s room also for some less known, but still mentionable works. one of them is hold up, made up of dizzying escapes, funky breakbeat and some less frantic episode.

marc & oveous bring the classic bruk flavours to atjazz’s label with their new e.p. ‘on again’. the original harks back to the old co-op nights with a tough bass synth and oveous’ soul laden vocals, tied together behind a punchy, syncopated broken beat rhythm. dress to sweat, this one will make the bodies move. first up on the flip side the ‘4x4 dub’ switches the rhythm to a straight up 4x4 house beat, but that subby synth carries through the broken beat touch. the original mixes’ vocals are dropped in favour of one of oveous’ short spoken word monologues before he steps back to let the music do the magic. the ‘dubstramental’ gives you one final interpretation utilising the same dubbed out template as the b1, but reverting back to the original broken beat pattern to give you three different flavours to throw down with.

brand new detroit duo man vs indian man comprises ian finkelstein (of scott grooves’s overdubs fame) and even haywood. complementing each other’s strengths, the pair make the perfect match as they pour out thick viscously barbed future soul in thick gooey doses, both “ice accountant” and “cloud nine” are wrapped in foggy layers of sleepy textures as the falsetto vocals and lean instrumentation cut through with dreamy delight. remixes from the legendary egyptian lover (cosmic electro), fellow detroitian pontchartrain (filtered disco house) and brazilian table daddy (lolloping dream tech).

two of the most refreshing artists in drum & bass today, villem & mcleod deliver their lp vision on spearhead records. having made waves throughout the scene in recent years with releases on a multitude of labels, their musicality mixed with dance floor flare sets the scene for the debut long player. funky, introspective at times, the album travels across v&m’s sound palette to create a beautifully crafted showcase that cements their status in 2018.
-we wrote the lp over a two year period of dramatic changes for us both, girlfriends, marriages, births, and deaths, it was this that fed back into the album. us trying to navigate our way through life, using that as inspiration to complete a dream we’d always talked about. writing an album is a different challenge than writing singles or an ep, it takes you deeper into how we want our sound to be remembered, more thought of the overall aesthetic, and ultimately more satisfying once we had completed it.- villem & mcleod 2018
